Isabella Bortolozzi is proud to present Jay Chung and Q Takeki Maeda's collaborative first solo exhibition in Berlin. The exhibition dissects the vanity that completes moral superiority, the indignation that only the cultish can nurture, and the steadfast faith in the good. These beliefs are nothing more than the cultivation of an insensitivity to doubt.
Without some kind of conviction, it isn't easy to stand aloof to ridicule, and one will always prefer prejudice to abandonment. It's always best to feel as if progress would justify deliberate cruelties, quiet the conscience, and simply work to keep one removed enough from everyday life to persevere.
After all, pure contentment cannot exist without, at the very least, a drop of condescension, and the merest of contributions to the universal calls for the celebratory drink and lip-smacking of self-satisfaction. I have never seen such a small amount of power go to someone's head.
Jay Chung, born 1976, Madison, WI, USA.
